Arputha College of Arts and Science was established in 1999 by the Thanjavur Christian Educational Society, Nirmala Nagar, Thanjavur, with a noble vision of extending higher education to the rural and underprivileged youth of Pudukkottai District. The institution had a humble beginning in Kovilur village, functioning in a rented building. With dedication and commitment, the college was later shifted to its permanent campus at Vamban Village on 6th June 2000. Situated in a remote rural area under Manjanviduthi Panchayat, the college serves students from numerous surrounding villages where opportunities for higher education were once very limited.
The college was founded under the inspiring leadership of Rev. Fr. G. Arul Irudayam, Founder Chairman, and Rev. Fr. S. Antony Swamy, Secretary. Though they are no longer with us, their vision continues to guide the institution. At present, Rev. Sr. A. M. Flora, Mother General of the Congregation of the Sisters of Jesus, serves as the Chairperson, and Sr A. Sahayam serves as the Secretary. At a time when many rural families were unable to send their children for higher education, Arputha College of Arts and Science emerged as a beacon of hope. It opened its doors to students from economically and socially disadvantaged backgrounds, empowering them through quality education and discipline.
To ensure effective governance, the institution has established various administrative bodies, including the Board of Management, Governing Council, Academic Council, and College Committee. The college follows the curriculum prescribed by Bharathidasan University and emphasizes both academic and personal development. In addition to classroom learning, the institution provides various support systems such as a language lab, smart classrooms, ICT-enabled learning, a digital library, remedial coaching, tutorial systems, mentoring, and counselling. Students are actively engaged in extension and co-curricular activities through NSS, YRC, RRC, Eco Club, Rotaract Club, Womenβs Cell, SC/ST Cell, and other forums.
The college focuses on skill development by offering job-oriented programmes to enhance employability and prepare students for real-world challenges:
The institution encourages faculty development through seminars, workshops, and research activities. Faculty members are motivated to pursue higher qualifications such as Ph.D., SET, and NET, ensuring quality teaching and academic excellence. From its modest beginnings to its present status as a growing centre of higher learning, Arputha College of Arts and Science continues to strive towards empowering rural youth, promoting social responsibility, and shaping a brighter future for society.
