Department Overview Photograph

The Department of English at Arputha College of Arts and Science, Vamban, was established in the year 2009 with the introduction of the B.A. English programme. The M.A. English programme was later introduced in 2018. Since its establishment, the department has been striving to provide quality education in English language and literature, especially to students from rural backgrounds, and to help them become confident, responsible, and skilled individuals. The department is affiliated with Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, and follows the curriculum and syllabus prescribed by the University.

The programmes offered by the department help students to develop language proficiency, communication skills, literary knowledge, creativity, and critical thinking abilities. The department aims to prepare students to face academic, professional, and social challenges with confidence. The teaching-learning process in the department is student-friendly and learner-centered. Faculty members encourage students to participate actively in classroom activities, discussions, seminars, debates, paper presentations, workshops, and literary association programmes. These activities help students to improve their communication skills, leadership qualities, creativity, and overall personality. The Department of English has consistently achieved good academic results, and students of the department secure University Ranks every year.

This reflects the hard work of the students and the dedicated guidance and support provided by the faculty members. The department also gives importance to value-based education by promoting discipline, ethical values, social responsibility, and humaneness through the study of literature. Students are encouraged to participate in co-curricular and extension activities that contribute to their personal growth and social awareness. To strengthen communication and language skills, the department is supported by a well-equipped Language Laboratory.

The language lab provides students with practical training in pronunciation, spoken English, listening skills, vocabulary development, and presentation skills through technology-enabled learning methods. It helps students to improve their fluency, confidence, and professional communication abilities. The department is also supported by a well-furnished library with a large collection of books related to English language and English literature, including all the prescribed books and reference materials recommended in the Bharathidasan University syllabus. The library helps students to develop reading habits and supports their academic learning effectively. With the guidance of experienced and committed faculty members, students are motivated to pursue higher education, teaching careers, media-related professions, and competitive examinations such as UGC-NET, SET, and TNPSC. The Department of English continues to work towards shaping students into competent, confident, and socially responsible individuals who can contribute positively to society.
